Heather “Razzlekhan” Morgan has been handed a nearly two-year prison sentence due to her involvement in the Bitfinex hack, which resulted in the theft of $10.8 billion.
Morgan worked alongside Ilya Lichtenstein to steal 120,000 Bitcoin (BTC) from Bitfinex, which was worth $17 million at the time of the theft.
Guilty Plea and Sentencing
The pair pleaded guilty to conspiracy and money laundering in July 2023 after being arrested in February of the previous year.
Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly of the U.S. District Court of the District of Columbia stated that Morgan knowingly committed serious crimes and only ceased her illegal actions when apprehended by law enforcement.
Morgan expressed remorse during the hearing, stating she only became aware of Lichtenstein’s theft after it had occurred.
Penalties and Laundering Methods
The U.S. court followed the prosecutor’s recommendation and issued Morgan an 18-month sentence.
Lichtenstein, who was the mastermind behind the hack, received a five-year prison sentence last week.
The maximum penalties for their crimes could have resulted in 25 years in prison.
However, the couple only laundered around 20% of the stolen funds.
They also forfeited all the proceeds from the theft after the federal authorities accused them of defrauding the U.S. and using sophisticated strategies to launder the money.
The couple used a variety of methods to launder the stolen funds, including exchanging assets across multiple chains, using crypto mixers to obscure their on-chain activities, trading crypto on the dark web, and purchasing gold.
